Identifying Addition Or Subtraction

In the word problems we have to first identify whether addition or subtraction is to performed

Identifying Subtraction: 

In the word problems if it is asked to find How many are left or How many more are required , we have to perform subtraction.

In the case out of a total number of things, if the number of one kind of things are given and the number of other kind of things are to be found  we have to perform subtraction

Identifying Addition:

In the word problems if it is asked to find the total number of things, or How many in all or How many all together we have to perform addition.

By regularly solving word problems it will become easier for you to identify the addition or subtraction

Let us consider the following example;

A shopkeeper sold 45 books and 34 notebooks. How items did the shopkeeper sell altogether?

Now let us identifying whether addition or subtraction is to performed

As in the  word problem we have to find items sold altogether. This shows it is addition.

Illustration 1: Sam needs 81 beads to make a necklace. He has 74 beads with him. How many beads does he need more?

A.  Addition

B. Subtraction

C. Both A and B

 None of these

Answer: B
